Nia Dance

I fell in love with Nia when the first lyrical sounds began to play and I was invited to dance.  I was asked to pay attention to feelings and sensations as I moved.  I was asked to tap into my strength, my delicacy, my power, my silliness, my grace … all this in a dance class?  I was hooked!

Practiced barefoot to music, Nia is a fitness fusion of dance (jazz, modern & Duncan Dance), martial (tai chi, tae kawn do, aikido) and healing (yoga, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique) movement forms.  It is a cardiovascular, whole-body workout adaptable to every level of fitness, every age and body type.  Movements are simple and repetitive to allow the body to relax and move in sensation whilst strengthening and conditioning the body.

As Debbie Rosas, co-founder of Nia explains, “We based Nia on a universal law of physics: form functions best when energy moves along the path of least resistance.  We believe that love, comfort and pleasure are paths of least resistance.  Using movement as a metaphor for life, we believe that when you allow the body to search for what feels good – what is nurturing, respectful and pleasurable – you naturally become strong and balanced.  Students leave class feeling revitalized, not exhausted.”
