Choose Bravery, Not Perfection

What you need are some safe and fun ways to bolster your bravery and practice being courageous!

Boys are taught to take risks, to see difficulties as challenges to be tackled. Girls are raised to be perfect: to play it safe, avoid risk and failure.

In a survey done in the work environment, it was shown that men will apply for a job if they meet 60% of the qualification criteria. Women on the other hand, will apply only if they meet 100% of the qualifications.  Women have been socialised to aspire to perfection … to be overly cautious.

These are the words of Reshma Saujani, Founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, imploring that we teach girls bravery instead of perfection.

When I invite women to try out a heart-art class or a dance class, I’m sometimes met with a belly-full of resistance. The thought of doing something “badly” can freeze someone into inertia. Why? Because we’ve been taught to believe that there are only two options in life: Success or Failure.

The fear of failure can conjure overwhelming self-flagellating thoughts and feelings, leaving you frozen in dilemma: do I even try this, or can I flee now and never ever come back?! But sooner or later, now that we’re all grown up, we have to put on our big-girl-panties and be courageous, take risks!

HOW TO PRACTICE COURAGE

Luckily there are arenas in which you can practice courage. Two spaces that uncannily just pop into my head are the dance floor and the art studio!

If in life you’re feeling stuck, knowing that your temperament is to play it safe, what better place to practice pushing beyond your boundaries than the safe space of a no-experience-needed intuitive art class?

If you know you have to take the next step, irrespective of the challenges you’ll have to face, why not practice physically moving your body with determination as you envision a smooth life transition, on the dance floor?

STRENGTHEN YOUR BRAVERY MUSCLE

With practice we strengthen our bravery muscle and before you know it, you’re taking more risks in your life. You’re being more courageous. And when we step into the world with courage, a myriad of unknown possibilities open up for us.

So what are you waiting for? Join me as we strengthen and declare ourselves on the nia dance floor! Celebrate with me as we emblazon our bold colours in the art space! Or dive into an immersion of empowering and mastering your courageous spirit in my November weekend retreat.
